Ident 1 - BBC One "Capes"Length The ident is 26 seconds long, which is just long enough for the announcer to the tell the viewers what show is to be aired next. The advantage of the ident being so short is that it keeps to the point and doesn't bore the audience with a long gap between programmes. Simplicity/complexity of the ident The ident is relatively simple with a few establishing shots before the final imagery comes on screen to reveal the logo and present the key theme of the ident. Describing what happens and it’s design The ident begins with a few close up shots of different angles of streets and peoples' reactions to seeing the cyclists and then shows cyclists in coats that span the full spectrum of colours moving round a roundabout, creating the imagery of a colour spiral. How the target audience is shown The use of the full colour spectrum shows BBC One's attempt to draw in the largest target audience it possibly can by allowing all viewers to feel accepted and part of the channel's intended target audience. The ident also represents the channel's attempts to unify all of it's target audience through the use of the imagery of a full colour spectrum and a circular motif. The purpose of the ident The purpose of the ident is to act as a short interlude between programmes to give the viewers a moment to prepare themselves for the next programme as well as to allow the announcer to speak to the audience and tell them what they will be watching next. This makes the audience feel included and entices them to watch the channel more. How the ident reflects that corporate identity BBC One's corporate identity is based around a wide variety of content and a broad target audience. The ident reflects this through its use of the full colour spectrum to represent both it's range of content but also the diversity of the channel's target audience. The ident also uses quite bold imagery, through the use of a mix of close ups and a crane shot to build up the imagery in the ident, which is typically gloomy, which allows the use of bright colours for the cyclists to stand out. This ties into BBC One's corporate identity as the BBC promotes itself as a strong and leading channel that towers above its competitors due to its history of being the longest running channel on British Television. The ident also links to BBC One's corporate identity as it uses the same circular motif t hat can be seen throughout the channel's idents. Ident 2 - Dave "Cannon"Length This ident is slightly shorter than the previous BBC example, being only 20 seconds long. This is, however, still long enough for the announcer to tell the audience what will be shown next as well as a small amount of extra details. Again, this has the advantage of not boring the audience due to its length and because it keeps to the point so that the audience can continue to enjoy their regular programmes without a large gap between shows. Simplicity/complexity of the ident The ident has a simple narative, with a large range of shots, most of which being close ups or long shots, and is cut to be slightly faster during the main action of trying to catch the performer with the net. Describing what happens and it’s design The narative of the ident is that a performer is being fired out of a cannon while a group of people try to catch her with a net, however she massively overshoots and ends up flying into the background of the shot. The ident is straight to the point and reflects the channel's comedic sense within the short narrative. How the target audience is shown The target audience is shown through the comedic story telling and imagery of the ident which reflects the type of humour the channel broadcasts to it's target audience. The purpose of the ident The ident serves the same purpose as the BBC One ident; to act as a short interlude between programmes to give the viewers a moment to prepare themselves for the next programme as well as to allow the announcer to speak to the audience and tell them what they will be watching next. Again, this makes the audience feel relaxed into watching the chanel and entices them to watch it more. How the ident reflects that corporate identity The ident reflects Dave's wacky and comedic nature which ties into one half of their corporate identity. Th ident also reflects the more mature half of Dave's corporate identity through the use of scenery, as the ident is set outside a large manor house or mansion in the countryside. The ident also features the channel's logo hidden throughout the ident and on thew main imagery, such as on the side of the cannon, this is a recurring theme throughout the channel's idents and therefore ties into the channel's corporate identity. Ident 3 - ITV "Surfboards"Length
This ident is shorter than both of the previous examples, at only 19 seconds in length. Simplicity/complexity of the ident This ident is very simple using only 1 shot that slowly pans and sharpens from its initial frame to reveal the main imagery. Describing what happens and it’s design The imagery of the ident shows someone having a lesson in how to surf while a dog is trying to get the two people to play with it. How the target audience is shown The target audience is shown through the use of imagery showing physical activity which reflects the kind of lifestyle that ITV believe their target audience to have. The inclusion of a dog in the ident suggests that the characters on screen may be a family, as a dog is commonly seen as a family pet, which links to ITV's family channel nature. The purpose of the ident This ident has the same purpose as the prior 2 examples; to act as a short interlude between programmes to give the viewers a moment to prepare themselves for the next programme as well as to allow the announcer to speak to the audience and tell them what they will be watching next. Like the previous examples, this relaxes the viewers into what they are watching and entices them to continue watching the channel. How the ident reflects that corporate identity SImilarly to BBC One, ITV has a corporate identity centered around airing a broad range and variety of content, however ITV focuses more on the lifestyle and way of living of their target audience, which is reflected by this ident that reflects the lifestyle ideas that ITV believes represents the some of the interests and lifestyle of their target audience.
