Promotion (advertising) Music videos are a great way to advertise an artist’s new song release, and often times the music video is the defining factor between whether an audience buys the song or not, as the audience may not initially like the song, and the video can help sell the track if the video is iconic enough for viewers to remember, and often helps the audience understand the lyrics of a song. Music videos can help an artist become well known extremely quickly. Often a music video can extend the audience of a song, and if the video is well received, then the video is for likely to spread around the world; thus gaining the artist a mass amount of publicity. This, however, also sometimes works in reverse, for example, the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, released 1982, was initially refused airing by the BBC, as they deemed it too scary for children. This worked to Michael Jackson’s advantage as it then spread to other countries, where his name wasn’t well known, and this publicity grew his audience and made his name world renowned and increased his income greatly.
