Spike JonzeAll of this director's music videos are well shot and fun to watch. Each shot is carefully considered and cut well. This is probably because of Jonze's history as a film director, where his talents are critically acclaimed, including winning 4 academy awards, for example, Best Director for "Being John Malkovich". One of the clear styles of Spike Jonze's work is that he doesn't emphasise representation throughout his work, rather, he focuses on producing an enjoyable cinematic experience, either through a visual storyline or an extended, choreographed routine. Another style of his videos are that they are fast paced and quickly cut, as well as this, the cutting between shots often keeps flowing motion between them. Jonze's videos tend to keep a similar variety of shots, that being a solid mix of close ups, mid shots, long shots and tracking shots to good effect. His focus on an enjoyable visual experience over a representative message in his visuals can almost certainly be accredited to his history as a film director. Jonze usually works within the Experimental, Rock and Electronic genres, and is well known for working with artists such as Fatboy Slim, Björk and Kanye West. His work often breaks conventions, as music videos in these genres often focus on representation and meaning rather than a cinematic experience. Codes of practice to consider when working as a music video producerLocation Permission:
It is a legal requirement to get permission to use private locations as filming locations, and permission is sometimes required when filming in public areas. This is a simple code and often can be resolved easily by merely asking permission to use a location on a certain date, however permission of use will not always be granted. BECTU: Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union This union provides advice and representation on health and safety, personal advice to individual members, training and courses. This union also has a firm belief in equality and representing all types of people equally, despite of race and disability etc. BBFC: British Board of Film Classification This board dictates the age ratings of films and other works such as music videos to ensure that public guidelines are put in place for viewing restrictions so that younger people are not shown imagery that is considered inappropriate for them. Therefore, it is important that a producer must only include appropriate imagery for their target audience, else the video may be rated higher than they are permitted to view. MCPS: Mechanical Copyright Protection System (PRS for Music) This society is an organisation of collective rights for musical works. They began in anticipation of the copyright act of 1911 and merged with the copyright protection society in 1924. They administer the rights of about 10 million musical works and ensure legal protection for them against unfair use.
