Task 1.9: Single Camera Techniques Essay
Single camera techniques are when video footage is shot with only 1 camera. This type of technique is usually only used in low budget music videos, films and news inserts. There are 2 main methods of single camera techniques; using 1 single long take with continuous flow and cutting between different shots all shot from the same camera, the latter is similar to using multiple cameras, but is a slower process due to only using 1 camera. Music videos using single camera techniques often create a visually interesting effect and break out of usual conventions of music videos. These types of videos also often attract more attention to them due to their unusual aesthetic appeal. Single, long take videos: Single take videos are often used in music videos and were utilized by the band “Okay Go”, for example their video “I won’t let you down” which used a long tracking shot filmed from an octocopter drone which was able to seamlessly change between being high in the air and being on ground level while tracking the band and their performance. Okay Go have also created other videos using only a single camera, for example their video “The writing’s on the wall” in which, the camera was mounted in a custom frame so that it could be quickly and easily passed around the entire set to record a continuous music video that could have been done using separate shots, but looks far more visually stunning when all the movement in-between is captured too; and in one of their most famous videos, “Here it goes again”, which used 1 continuous shot that never changed throughout the whole video, and captured the band performing their dance routine on treadmills. This effect in “Here it goes again” also allowed the band the walk out of frame from the front and then reappear at the back of the frame. The advantages of this technique is that it allows for the video to show a great deal of creativity in their videos, and makes them stand out from the norm by having very eye catching and interesting videos and it allows the crew to experiment with different shot types and zooms. This technique, when carried out correctly, creates a very smooth look which is very compelling for the viewer to watch, it also means that very little editing is usually needed as the video is already smooth enough. The last advantage is that these videos are far cheaper to make due to the need for only 1 camera, usually a drone, octocopter or a DSLR Camera. The disadvantage of this technique is that far more planning is needed as if even 1 thing goes wrong, then the whole thing needs to be reshot, this also makes it far more time consuming as many different takes will need to be made, as Okay Go took roughly 60 attempts to record “The writing’s on the wall” and it also is difficult to record as the camera has to remain steady and look perfect. With this technique, if lots of different environments are used to record in, then different amounts of editing may be needed so that the film looks usable, for example, if the camera were to move from a darker environment to a very well lit one. This technique would not be used in films or TV programs as they are in music videos as it is far harder to make a clear story like this. Similar to multi cam, various takes – edited together: Using this method, many different shots can be filmed with the same camera and then be edited together later, which is similar to how multi camera techniques are used. This technique is often used in news inserts, or conversations in film and TV, especially if over the shoulder shots are used, which are pretty much impossible to film when using multiple cameras continuously. This technique allows the crew to set up the camera in different positions in preparation for each shot, so that the camera’s movement between positions is not captured on screen, which could potentially break up the flow of the music video. The positives of this technique is that it is far easier to film as different shots are filmed at different times, and filming does not have to be restarted completely if even the slightest mistake is made. The negatives of this technique is that it takes longer to film than multi-camera videos as different shots have to be prepared for and can break up the action of the scene, and the editing process is longer than filming in just one shot, but shorter than multi-camera. In conclusion, both techniques of single camera filming have advantages and disadvantages to using them, however, the choice of which filming type to use depends on what you wish to achieve with a specific video, then decide what technique is best suited to it.
