Task 1.4: Music Video Recipe 1970’s: ABBA – “SOS” Camera Quality: The camera quality definitely looks aged due to slight film grain, sepia tone, and lens flare from the studio lights. What style is it in? : The video is performance based and shows the group performing live to the camera, including the live music and a dance routine. Who is in it? : The video contains only the group performing, 2 males and 2 females. Their costumes clearly show the time period, as they were very standard outfits of pop music artists in the 70’s; including very open ended trouser legs. Setting/Location: The video was filmed in a studio, seemingly without an audience. This shows that, at the time, budgets for music videos were drastically lower than they were today, as they could not afford to use a big studio or any real scenery. Studio performance videos were also commonly used for pop music in the 70’s, so this video fits the genre well. Use of shots: The video uses a variety of close ups, used for focusing on and emphasizing the lyrics being performed by the singer, and long shots, used for emphasizing the dance routine performed by the group throughout the video. Use of editing work: The video has a relatively slow pace to match the slow pace of the music. The switching of shots fits the video as it focuses on the singer as they perform, and the band as a whole performing their dance routine, and all of these shots are connected by cross fades, thus adding to the slow pace of the video. Props: No props are used throughout the video, however there is a pot of flowers used as a stage decoration, again showing the budget of the video, which is largely down to the era it was made in. Sound: The sound appears to be digetic, as the video appears to be a fully live performance. Lighting: The lighting in the video is high key studio lighting, in a large variety of colours, this is likely because, in the 70’s, a large range of colours were commonly seen in almost every form of media. Duration: The video and the song both last for 3 minutes and 31 seconds. 1980’s: Fine Young Cannibals – “She drives me crazy” Camera Quality: The video looks aged due to its low resolution and clear film grain. What style is it in? : The video is performance based as it includes the group singing and performing a dance routine to the camera. Who is in it? : The video contains the group performing to he camera. Their costumes are very standard 80’s clothing including jackets and undershirts. Setting/location: The video is recorded in a studio; this would be because of music videos still having a relatively low production budget in the 1980’s, meaning that producers couldn’t afford to use big open scenery due to the costs of transporting the camera’s and the crew etc. Use of shots: A lot of close ups are used throughout the video to focus on and emphasize the lyrics of the song. On top of this mid shots and long shots are used to emphasize the dance routine and performance of the group. Use of editing work: The shots in the video are connected by jump cuts to maintain a fast pace throughout the video; some still shots are also connected like this creating a stop motion effect. Some of the long tracking shots, which show the entire group, loop back round to show a member that already appeared earlier in the same shot without them moving, for example: Props: The video uses a selection of unusual props, including 2 striped tubes which 2 people appearing to be dressed as puppets pop out of and instruments.Sound: The sound is purely non-digetic and consists entirely of the soundtrack. Lighting: The video makes use of high key studio lighting to keep the entire studio bright so that the group stays clearly visible throughout the video. Duration: Both the song and the video last for 3 minutes and 33 seconds. 1990’s: Technotronic – “Pump Up The Jam” Camera Quality: The camera quality clearly shows its age due to the low resolution and clear film grain. What style is it in? : The video is very surrealistic, using brightly coloured backgrounds added via a green / blue screen being Chroma keyed out, and a lot of the shots rotating at fast speeds on the screen. The video is also partially performance based as the group performs a dance routine to the camera. Who is in it? : The video contains the group themselves, and their outfits clearly show a very “90’s vibe” due to them wearing either brightly coloured exercise wear, or a shirt, baseball cap and jeans. Setting/location: The entire video was shot in a studio, in front of a green / blue screen. The effects added to the background in place of the removed blue / green screen shows that this video ha a higher budget that videos made earlier, as the producers actually had the money to make use of, what was at the time, quite new technology in the way of Chroma key and visual effects. Use of shots: The video uses a lot of close up shots of both the performers and, at the start of the video, of drum symbols. The video also uses far shots to focus on the full dance routine of the performers. Use of editing work: The video makes use of jump cuts to connect all of the shots so that the video maintains a constant fast pace to match the backing track playing throughout. Props: The video does not make use of any props; instead the focus of the video is the dance routine being performed in front of a green/blue screen. Sound: The video’s sound is purely non-digetic as the soundtrack is playing throughout the video and the lyrics are lip-synced over it. Lighting: The video makes use of high key studio lighting; this would be so that there were minimal errors and interferences with the green/blue screen, which require a constant solid colour to be removed effectively in editing. Duration: Both the music and the video last for 3 minutes and 43 seconds. 2000’s: OutKast - "B.O.B.” Camera Quality: The camera quality is notably better than the previously mentioned videos, with no film grain and a far higher resolution. What style is it in? : The video seems to be in an interpretive style, as the video half focuses on performing to the camera, and half focuses on some course of events, even though these events don’t appear to tell a clear story. Who is in it? : The video contains the artist and a large amount of extras. Setting/location: The bulk of the video takes place in different parts of a town, such as driving down a road in a car. All of these locations have been recoloured in editing to make them largely abstract. The performance-based shots have been shot in front of a green screen. Use of shots: The performance-based sections of the song are either close up shots focusing on the artist’s mouth to emphasize the lyrics, or they are long/mid shots which focus on the dance routine. The bulk of the video, uses a large variety of shots; including very long shots, used as establishing shots, and mid shots to show the majority of the action of the video. Use of editing work: The majority of shots are connected only via jump cuts, however towards the start of the video, shots of the artist’s face as he performs, and shots of him during the large, action parts of the video, are connected by zooming in and out of the artist’s face, which creates a good flow between these shots, as they switch a good few times at the start of the video, without damaging the pace of the video too much. Props: About 1 minute into the song, a car pulls up in front of the artist, this car then becomes the main focus of the next half-minute section of the video. Sound: The sound is purely non-digetic as the video contains only the soundtrack. Lighting: The video appears to have been shot outside and used natural lighting. Duration: Both the music and the video last for 4 minutes and 23 seconds. 2010’s: Eminem – “Love the way you lie” Camera Quality: The camera quality is noticeably better than all previously mentioned videos, due to a 16:9 aspect ratio, 1920x1080p HD resolution and no film grain. What Style is it in? : The video is half in a performance style, where the 2 artists perform directly to the camera, and half in a narrative style which tells a story through the video. Who is in it? : The video contains the 2 artists, Eminem and Rihanna, and few extras hired for the narrative section of the video. Setting/location: The narrative part of the video takes place in a variety of locations including a house, a supermarket and a bar. The performance section of the video takes place in both a field and a burning backdrop. Use of shots: The performance section of the video uses a mix of mostly close ups and mid shots, to emphasize the lyrics or the scene, whereas the narrative section uses almost only close ups so as to focus heavily on the action of each scene. Use of editing work: The shots in the video are all connected via jump cuts so as to maintain a fast pace throughout. Props: The narrative section of the video uses props such as beer bottles and a stuffed bear. Sound: The sound is purely non-digetic and consists only of the soundtrack playing throughout the video. Lighting: The lighting throughout the bulk of the video is low key and quite dark in tone, with two exceptions, the field shots of Eminem and the early morning house shots, which appear to have natural lighting. Duration: Both the song and the video last for 4 minutes and 26 seconds. Part 2:
